SUMMER 2011 Updates
West Principal Mr. Dan Martin ‘72 (yes, Mr. Martin is a '72
West Alum!) announced at the Scholastic Departmental Awards on May
25 that just under 200 West seniors will graduate this year. This
is the most in the past five years. At the time of the Awards, West
students had reported receiving close to 1 million dollars in scholarship
offers with more still coming in.
Mr. Martin talked with those attending the May Alumni Association
General Meeting in the West cafeteria. He explained West being a STEM
school with ‘project based’ classes in Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics. The STEM Learning Network (OSLN) is a privately supported
funded program to provide a high-quality education. The program focuses
on innovative teaching and learning.
In a program to update the interior of West, an artist recently painted
some murals on the 2nd floor west hallway. The school Motto is: Bring
Your Best to West Every Day! The Motto is frequently used in material
provided the students. New technology has been added to all science,
social studies, and math classes.
The current West enrollment is 800. The old West High, renamed Starling
Elementary when the ‘new’ West opened in 1929, will be replaced by
a new school that will have classes for kindergarten through the 8th
grade.
Mr. Martin noted some of the outstanding athletes at West, especially
Chris Rhodes who has been named an Under Armor All American
for his baseball pitching. Chris was also on the football and basketball
teams.
In other sports news at West: Our congratulations to
our student-athletes!
Caryle Yolk received first team, All-City League honors for Bowling.

for two years, ran cross country for one year, and was on the basketball
team for one year. She has a 3.853 GPA.

Dispatch as being the top baseball performer for the week. He pitched
a two-hitter in a 2-0 win over Marion Franklin. His efforts included
14 strikeouts and one walk. In another game the previous week, Carlos
hit 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI against Walnut Ridge. In the
games he stole three bases. Carlos also received Special mention honors
in the Dispatch All-Metro Baseball Team.
