FRANK BROUGH RICHEY

Athlete, coach, and patriot
Frank was born on
June 4, 1920, at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus and passed away at
home in Athens, Ohio, on March 8, 1997. Frank was active at West High
School as Student Council President, Chairman of the Social Committee,
Latin Club, "W" Secretary and Treasurer, named to the All
High Football teams in 1936 and 1937, member of the Basketball Team
1936 and 1937 and the Baseball Team in 1936, 1937, and 1938.
Frank ran a record 102-yard touchdown against Newark High School during
the 1936 Homecoming game, a feat that has never been surpassed. His
high school coach, Harold Wise, regarded him as one of the greatest
players he ever coached. Frank attended the Hum Preparatory School
in Princeton, New Jersey, and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University.
Frank volunteered for
the Naval Reserve while attending Ohio Wesleyan and was called to
active duty with a commission as an Ensign. During active duty in
World War II he commanded the U.S.S. Catalpa AN-10 and was honorably
discharged as a Lieutenant J.G.

Frank received his Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin and
went on to teach and coach at Ohio University. He was a member of the
Ohio University Varsity football coaching staff where he made a great
contribution to their success. During his career at O.U. Frank coached
many West alumni. He received a Certificate of Merit by the Green and
White Club of Athens for his outstanding achievements in the field of
athletics. He was inducted into the O.U. Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.
Frank and Ruth Richey were
married for 52 years. They are parents of Lynn R. Mauch of Gahanna and
Robert Richey of Athens. They have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Frank was well loved by his family and friends and commanded the respect
of those who knew him.
